The Downtowners – Aegina Angelades, Kyma Managing Partner

As all who know Aegina Angeliades can attest, everything about her is unique. Her diverse personal and professional interests (more on that
momentarily). Her devotion to everyone in her large extended family.
And even her name.
“My first name is pronounced like regular ‘Gina’ except with an ‘A’ sound (like in the word ‘amen’) in front,” she explains. “A lot of my friends and family call me ‘Gigi.’”
Born and raised in Long Island, New York, Angeliades has spent more than three decades in the food service business. When her entrepreneurial father founded the unique Kyma Restaurants concept in 2010 in New York City, Angeliades was tapped to become a restaurateur herself, as were her three sisters (“I’m VERY close to all of them!”) and eight nieces and nephews.
She has loved every second of it.
“We are Greeks, so we take feeding people as a privilege and serving them excellent healthy authentic food as a responsibility,” she says. “We opened three locations in Manhattan and have another on the way in Connecticut, but it’s our Kyma West Palm Beach location in Downtown
West Palm Beach that I opened and now operate with family and friends that became the most special one to me.”
But as busy as Kyma keeps Angeliades, she has just as much on her plate outside of the restaurant.
“I studied spiritual psychology in college, and wrote a book of memoirs,” she notes. “Nowadays, I also manage some real estate.”
She’s so fulfilled by her various endeavors that she paraphrases a famous quote by author James Michener, explaining that “because I love it all so much that I make little distinction between work and play, because I always feel like I’m doing both!”
What do you like most about being in Downtown?
The energy! People are so kind and friendly and really appreciate the beauty of Kyma’s design, the outstanding food, and the fun we incorporate into the dining experience. We have so many regulars, and often see customers making the rounds because they know so many other guests. Our patrons have created such a great community within our four walls.
I rent an apartment one block from Kyma, right in Downtown. No matter what kind of day I may have had, I am always overwhelmed with gratitude when walking even just that one block to my home. There is always something happening. Live music, people walking their dogs or eating ice cream. Downtown West Palm Beach has all the pluses of a big metropolis such as convenience, walkability, and energy, among others but none of the downsides like overcrowding or noise pollution.
How has Downtown West Palm Beach evolved since you’ve been here?
We found our space two years ago, and since then the ongoing expansion has helped increase our foot traffic and business. I expect that growth to continue as more residents and businesses move here, and elected and corporate leaders continue making capital investments in the Downtown District. We’re just so happy to be a part of what is, in my opinion, the best city in the whole State of Florida!
