Join us for an evening of open and meaningful conversation at the Human Library, where people become Open Books and their personal experiences become stories you can borrow.

Select an Open Book from the event catalog, sit down together and take part in an honest conversation. Readers are encouraged to listen, ask respectful questions and learn directly from someone whose experiences or perspective may be different from their own.

By moving beyond labels and assumptions, the Human Library brings together people who may not otherwise cross paths. Each conversation offers an opportunity to challenge stereotypes, broaden your perspective and better understand the person behind the story.

Borrow An Open Book

Open Books are volunteers who are willing to share their personal stories and experiences through respectful conversation. Their stories may explore topics such as race, culture, identity, disability, mental health, homelessness, addiction, faith, occupation, family experiences and more.

Browse the Open Book catalog and select the stories and perspectives you are interested in learning more about.

The Open Book catalog will be available closer to the event.

Schedule a Conversation

Reserve a time to borrow an Open Book for a conversation lasting up to 30 minutes. Each conversation may include up to seven Readers, allowing for a small and engaging group experience.

Readers are welcome to borrow more than one Book throughout the evening, based on availability.

BECOME AN OPEN BOOK

Do you have a personal experience that others could benefit from hearing? Have you experienced being stereotyped, judged, misunderstood or treated differently because of your identity, background, occupation, beliefs or life experiences?

We are seeking community members who are willing to serve as Open Books and participate in open, respectful conversations with Readers.

Open Books do not need professional speaking or storytelling experience. Selected participants will receive guidance and preparation before the event.

What Is The Human Library?

The Human Library® is a library of people and their experiences. Instead of borrowing a traditional book, Readers borrow a person for a conversation.

The Human Library was created to acknowledge and challenge the prejudices and assumptions we may carry about one another. It provides a welcoming environment where topics that are often misunderstood, stigmatized or avoided can be discussed openly and respectfully.

The people serving as Books have personally experienced prejudice, bias, discrimination or misunderstanding related to aspects of their identity, heritage, occupation or life experiences. Through conversation, they invite Readers to ask questions, listen and learn from their perspectives.

At the Human Library, every Book has a story, and every conversation can help us see one another differently.
