11/14/13 – Author, City Planner, “Walkable City” Advocate Speaks at Public Forum in Downtown West Palm Beach

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (Nov. 14, 2013) — Author Jeff Speck will appear at an evening lecture series in West Palm Beach on Nov. 18 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the City Hall Commission Chambers located at 401 Clematis Street. The event is sponsored by theWest Palm Beach Downtown Development Authority, in partnership with the City of West Palm Beach and The Palm Beach County Planning Congress and the Treasure Coast Chapter of FAPA. Members of the American Institute of Certified Planners (AICP) that attend this public forum will receive two credits towards their AICP certification.

 

Speck, a city planner and architectural designer, is the author of Walkable City: How Downtown Can Save America, One Step at a Time and is an active international advocate for smart growth and sustainable design. Speck has dedicated his career to determining what makes cities thrive, which he has boiled down to one key factor: walkability. Throughout the lecture he will articulate the economic, epidemiological and environmental arguments to end automobile dependency and focus on his powerful and achievable vision of how to make ordinary cities great again.

 

Speck is the former Director of Design for the National Council of Arts where he oversaw the Mayors’ Institute on City Design and created the Governors’ Institute on Community Design which fights urban sprawl. He also serves as Contributing Editor to Metropolis Magazine and on the Sustainability Task Force of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. Jeff is the co-author of Suburban Nation: The Rise of Sprawl and the Decline of the American Dream as well as The Smart Growth Manual.
